Environmental persistence of chemicals.

چکیده
BACKGROUND The hazard criterion of persistence as it applies to chemicals in the environment is reviewed and discussed. This quantity can not be measured directly in the environment, thus it must be estimated using models that synthesise information on chemical half-lives and partitioning properties, the nature of the environment and how the chemical is released into the environment. MAIN FEATURES It is suggested that the preferred criterion is the average residence time of the chemical in the environment, i.e. conceptually the sum of the life-times of all molecules (attributable only to losses by degrading reactions) divided by the number of molecules. If all chemical fate processes are first order, this persistence is independent of the quantity of chemical introduced and whether introduction is steady- or unsteady-state in nature. It is shown that in a multimedia environment persistence is affected not only by degradation kinetics, but also by mode-of-entry and partitioning. For screening level purposes a Level II equilibrium model may be adequate but a Level III model is generally preferable for estimating the average persistence. If a distribution of persistences is required a dynamic Level IV model must be used. DISCUSSION The implications for regulating chemicals on the basis of persistence are discussed. CONCLUSION It is concluded that the preferred strategy is to use Level II, III, and IV models and that the use of only degradation kinetics or media-specific half-lives can be misleading and uneconomical.

Application of multimedia models for screening assessment of long-range transport potential and overall persistence.
We propose a multimedia model-based methodology to evaluate whether a chemical substance qualifies as POP-like based on overall persistence (Pov) and potential for long-range transport (LRTP). It relies upon screening chemicals against the Pov and LRTP characteristics of selected reference chemicals with well-established environmental fates. Results indicate that chemicals of high and low conce...
متن کاملVirtual screening for environmental pollutants: structure-activity relationships applied to a database of industrial chemicals.
The current risk paradigm calls for individual consideration and evaluation of each separate environmental pollutant, but this does not reflect accurately the cumulative impact of anthropogenic chemicals. In the present study, previously validated structure-activity relationships were used to estimate simultaneously the baseline toxicity and atmospheric persistence of approximately 50,000 compo...
متن کاملSCRAM: A scoring and ranking system for persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic substances for the North American Great Lakes.
The Scoring and Ranking Assessment Model (SCRAM) was developed to serve as an analytical tool in chemical scoring and ranking of Great Lakes contaminants. The model provides an initial screening evaluation, based on minimal amount of data, of large numbers of chemicals to identify those chemicals that have the greatest potential to cause adverse effects. The SCRAM model is different from most s...

This review summarizes recent evidence that prenatal exposure to diverse environmental chemicals dysregulates the fetal epigenome, with potential consequences for subsequent developmental disorders and disease manifesting in childhood, over the lifecourse, or even transgenerationally. The primordial germ cells, embryo, and fetus are highly susceptible to epigenetic dysregulation by environmenta...
متن کاملRefinement of biodegradation tests methodologies and the proposed utility of new microbial ecology techniques.
Society's reliance upon chemicals over the last few decades has led to their increased production, application and release into the environment. Determination of chemical persistence is crucial for risk assessment and management of chemicals. Current established OECD biodegradation guidelines enable testing of chemicals under laboratory conditions but with an incomplete consideration of factors...
